Sue, Fred and Linda took an extra ride into downtown Key West with me this morning so that I could get my photo opportunities at the Southernmost Point in the continental U.S. (I’ve been to the one in Hawaii). We then headed for the end of US 1 to prove I made it to the end!
Along the way I finally found the local post office to snap one of my traditional photos. The building didn’t have the name on it, so I opted for the nice sign out front. I ran into the local manager there and he mentioned how difficult it is to keep staffing up as the cost of living is so high here. I understand.
We also stopped for coffee and key lime snacks. As we biked around town, we found some lifelike statues along the way. I took several pictures, but have only included one here.
We headed back to the campground and stopped at the Hog Fish Bar and Grill for lunch. I opted for the local special of Hog Fish and it was great. If you wonder what it tastes like, it is like mild scallops.
And if you thought that people only came on the ride to bicycle, or drink in Key West, one of the couples on the ride were married on the beach Wednesday. I tried my best to snap a photo of the sign outside their tent, but the wind was blowing pretty good.
Early on when we had the first team meeting Bubba told us the age of the youngest rider (24) and the oldest (91). Yes, you read that right – ninety-one!!! The young man uses a pedal assist bike. He told Fred that without assist he averages about 8mph. With the pedal assist, he reaches about 16mph using his same effort as without. I keep telling anyone who will listen – bicycling is an any age friendly sport.
