Day 1 - San Diego to Alpine

What a day!  We started about 15 minutes late to let a rain band pass by so that we could take group photos at the Pacific Ocean’s edge.  Most of the riders also “dipped” their tires in the ocean, and we were no exception.  Thanks to my awesome nephew Brian and his equally amazing wife Kate, Janet and I have many great photos of the day’s start.  I can’t thank them enough!!  In the group photo, Janet and I are holding the middle sign.

We saw some gorgeous scenery when we biked through Mission Trails Regional Park.  A member of Bubba’s crew said it will just keep getting better.  My goal for the day was to average 10mph as we had a pretty stiff elevation climb today (Bubba said the first 30 miles tomorrow are worse – yikes).  I achieved my goal and my legs/knees are sore to show for it.  During the last six miles I probably asked Janet to stop every ½ mile to regain my legs.  It was the first time in my life I had unbearable leg cramps.  Janet stopped to help a fellow rider off his bike when he cramped up so bad that he couldn’t get off his bike.  It helps to have a retired nurse as your biking partner!

One fish taco for lunch $3.50, an ice cream cone at McDonalds $1.00, having your daughter and two nephews tell you how proud they are of you – PRICELESS.

The jersey I wore today, under the jacket and safety vest, was Doug's last DALMAC jersey. He rode that ride in 2014 with my son-in-law Adam.

Dinner menu from Day 1.  Not shown on the menu board was a mixed vegetable tomato soup that really hit the spot as the temperatures kept dropping,  The chef traveling with us lived up to her reputation!
